About The Art

I have always loved and admired the type of art that tells a story without words.  Such artists as Bev Doolittle and Michael Whelan are great examples of artists who really understand how to do this, to not just create a “pretty picture” but to narrate a story within it as well.  What is going on in the scene?  What is the character (or characters) thinking or feeling?  What is their intent or emotion?  Every time you look at the art you see something new, experience something different, a nuance you hadn’t noticed before.  This kind of art influences me greatly.

I also love the composition and flow of art, how shapes, lines, and forms draw you around the piece, directing your eye here or there.  The right use of color in a piece also helps with this flow and I endeavor to utilize these techniques in all of my art.  Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don’t, but I am always striving to tell a story, to achieve that flow, to catch the eye with color.

The mediums I primarily use are watercolor with colored pencil on smooth Bristol or Mixed Media paper.  I draw out the piece first, then I begin adding washes of watercolor until I have the base colors down.  Then I begin using colored pencil to start adding depth and detail to the piece.  Sometimes I may use a touch of acrylic paint or ink pen to add certain details to the piece, but not always.   I also paint in Acrylics on Illustration board or claybord/Masonite.  I usually will fully draw out the piece and then begin carefully adding acrylic over the drawing, working dark to light, with layers of washed, textures, more washes, texture again, and continuing this until I have built up the painting.  I am still learning this medium and trying out new tricks here and there so I expect my techniques to change as I learn and grow.  A full list of the materials I use can be found here.
